We all know about the power of positive thinking - even if we may disagree with some of the wilder claims for the discipline! But there is no doubting the effects of negative thinking, especially on a trade show stand.
Let's face it, trade shows are hard work for everyone; the organisers (though they get little sympathy), the visitors and the stand staff. And it is those staff on the stand I want to concentrate on.
Come three-thirty their feet are aching and their heads are spinning with disbelief at some of the things they have heard from visitors. They're a bit sweaty and feeling crumpled; break time is still 30 minutes away and they really need a coffee or a drink of water and chance to freshen up. And it's only day one!
So, if you recognise yourself in that situation, how do you remain positive? Here are a few ideas:
1. Apply perspective. Ask yourself, "Considering the problems faced by others - homelessness, violence, redundancy - how badly off am I really?
2. Encourage a co-worker. You are all in the same boat, so they feel the way you do. It is amazing how high your spirits can be lifted by offering a few words of encouragement to someone else.
3. Breathe. Concentrate on breathing deeply for a few seconds. Pull your shoulders back and notice the smooth passage of your breath as it comes in and flows out. (But don't miss that passing visitor whose order is going to make this all worthwhile!)
4. Re-focus. Clear your mind. Think about why you are here and tell yourself you are about to make a difference - to the next visitor, to yourself, to your company.
5. And, if all else fails, remind yourself, "This too will pass."!
A final thought. If you are the boss, your attitude will be reflected by your staff. Stay positive and let them know how valuable they are!
